Hemingway and Technical Difficulties

Hi Everyone,
"Hemingway" 6" x 6" watercolor on 260lb Arches by Carrie Waller
I hope all my US friends had a great holiday on Monday!  I debated posting on the Monday of a 3 day weekend, and was on the fence and then my computer did the deciding for me!!  Technical difficulties, the kind where you want to throw the computer out the window, go outside pick it up, bring it back in and throw it outside the window again!!  My handsome, hero of a husband fixed the computer tonight and managed to not throw it out the window.  So I'm back in the computing/posting business.  Oh and can I tell you he had to bring in another computer so he could research how to fix our desk top.  Enough to make you want to pull all your hair out, aghhhhh!

So without further ado I'm sharing the second in my Hopper series.  "Hemingway".  Edward Hopper's painting "Nighthwawks" was inspired by Hemingway's short story "The Killers", so I decided to pay tribute to Hemingway.  Ernest loved a cocktail, especially from a favorite drinking hole in Cube called El Floridita.  So I included a rum daiquiri or in the case of my still life prop a lime slushy from Sonic sitting on a coaster from El Floridita, several Hemingway books and just a hint of "Nighthawks" peeking at you in the bottom right hand corner.  I really like the feel of this piece.

I really should take pictures of me setting up these still life scenarios.  I had my little table with my favorite white marble slab sitting in my driveway, because that's where the golden afternoon sun is.  I moved my little table several times to get the perfect light with the shadows in the right place, all the while feverishly placing the props and having to refill my daiquiri as it was melting in the 100 degree temperatures, it's really a funny little dance:)

  9. The painting is really fantastic, Carrie. But I also love the other dimensions: the research, the planning and finally all that coming together in such a clever composition... there's always a lot more to your painting than painting! That's what gives them that edge!

    Brilliant!

  10. Found your blog through Lori’s and have been following all of your “Ball Jar” paintings. Never knew what that was. Then the other day, a friend gave me a jar of homemade jam and, to my surprise, it was one of those jars. It made me think of your paintings, and I just had to let you know. Now I have my very own “Ball” jar!

I also want to commend you on your beautiful work and your creativity.
