Luke

watercolor on paper 8x10

I've been in a Holiday bubble, today I emerged and realized it's Monday, and that it is time to get back into the grind.  Laundry, dishes, rinse and repeat, oh and try to get some painting time in there too.  It's been a great Christmas, my Mom and brother came for a visit.   They are sadly leaving today:(  The boys have had a blast.  It was so fun to watch Christmas through their eyes.  I've been reading a lot of things about it being bad luck to leave your tree up after Christmas.  I do not adhere to this myth and I think it is tad on the Grinchy side strip everything down immediately, so at our house we will still be enjoying the decorations for a little while.

This week I'm posting a painting I did as a gift for my brother and sister-in-law.  I painted my adorable nephew Luke.  I painted this portrait in black and white watercolors.  I just love black and white portraits.  I think it's timeless and elegant.  Even in my home I have mostly black and white photographs framed.  I may venture into some color portrait paintings, but I think I will stick with a very clean, limited palette.  And I really love leaving a plain white background.

I hope that you have enjoyed your Holiday and are looking forward to ushering in a New Year.  I am looking forward to 2011, a whole new year of endless possibilities.

Carrie

  1. Beautiful portrait, love the expression. And I agree with you, black & white is timeless & always carries a bit of elegance with it, no matter what the subject. Glad you had such a great holiday, and I leave my tree up for a bit after the holidays myself. Just long enough to enjoy it, but not too long that I'm getting anxious about getting things "back to normal" in the house!

Did you mean you are looking forward to 2011 and the endless possibilities? 2012 is yet another year away (oh please, I don't want to age any faster than time is doing to me!! LOL)

  2. Beautiful Carrie! Glad to see you doing some portraits. It doesn't matter if they are in b&w or color, portraits of children are always timeless.
Sounds like you had a wonderful Christmas. Best wishes to you and your family in the New Year.

  5. I love love love this painting you did for us. I almost cried when Jon showed it to me Christmas morning (and it wasn't the pregnancy hormones). I am definitely going to call you soon and thank you over the phone. Just wanted to wait until the holiday craziness calmed down. Especially since I know you had family visiting. Talk to you soon. -sarah

  6. I've never seen watercolor done in black and white tones like that! I had to look carefully to make sure it wasn't a photo! Wow!

  7. We leave our tree up after Christmas as well. I've never heard about it being bad luck! The preparations before Christmas are always such a blur. So for me, it's nice to finally relax with a cup of coffee in front of the tree after it's all over! The portrait you gave your brother and his wife is just amazing. They must have been thrilled!

  8. It looks great Carrie! I love that expression. :) Black and white watercolors are fun aren't they? I've got one lined up and ready to go too. And I've still got my tree up too, it comes down New Year's Day! I hope you're well Carrie! And that you had a great Christmas!

  9. BEautiful painting! You are such an excellent draftsman it blows me away!

NOT bad luck to keep your tree up. In our neighborhood we all kept them up till 'Little Christmas' - the Epiphany.

  10. Hey, Stephen's doing great at his painting, too. Love, love his blue and orange sort-of-symmetrical piece. He's showing some signs of artistic color sense. Isn't it wonderful nurturing a child in art?
