Me and My Shadow (still life Red Hen)

Watercolor on paper 10" x 10"

I have been on a two week painting hiatus due to a lot of traveling.  I have to say it was a little nerve racking trying to get back into the swing of things.  I had the best intentions to paint on the road, but one excuse after another I talked myself out of it.  I painted this painting to get back in practice.  I really like this little red hen and I had so much fun painting my Illuminated Pumpkins I wanted to paint some more colored glass.

I mentioned we have been traveling.  We have been to Baton Rouge, New Orleans, back to Alabama for a night, and off again to Orlando.  It's been a lot of together time in a car for our family.  My youngest son Sam is obsessed with Elmo so we have watched 'Elmo in Grouchland' non-stop during our entire vacation.  Sometimes I think that is the only word he knows, Elmo, Elmo, Elmo!  Brian had a convention to attend in Orlando so the boys and I did some site seeing.  We did spend one family day at Sea World, but the rest of the time was just Steven, Sam and I.  We visited the Orlando Museum of Art, small but nice, the Morse museum, which was beautiful, it has mostly Louis Comfort Tiffany works, the Leu Gardens, which were fabulous, and we went to Downtown Disney.  We did Disney World last year so that wasn't on our agenda this trip.  It was a nice trip but I'm glad to be home.

I have a lot of painting to catch up on I'm planning on entering a few exhibits so get your passports out because I'll be taking you on a trip to Italy next week.

  11. Fabulous! Love the unusual dish and that great reflection. The pattern on the glass looks very difficult but you mastered it beautifully. Great job on that shadow and the way the light filters through the pattern to create those dots of red. Just GREAT!

  15. Carrie, I find that you are excellent in the representation of the transparent objects. I had liked your pumpkins so much and this small hen is also brilliant. Bravo Carrie, you enchant me with your paintings.

  16. Carrie: I often don't feel artistically "smart" enough to comment on your paintings, but I will say this--you continue to amaze me each blog entry!!! You are so very talented! I enjoy seeing what you have created each week.

Olivia, Thank you, I love that you are enchanted with my paintings, enchanting is a great compliment:)

Kristina, I really appreciate you saying such nice words. Never worry about being artistically "smart" enough, if you think it's pretty or it makes you smile that is all that matters. Can't believe you have a 2 year old, has it sunk in?

  21. WOW!! That is truly amazing! I love the setting you have for the hen as well - no distractions from the star of the show.

Enjoyed hearing about your car trip and had to laugh out loud. My granddaughter made me spend a whole weekend watching Care Bears over and over and over and over. I hid it next time I babysat!

  22. I really love this one. Brilliantly executed and beautifully light. I can remember seeing this chicken bowl at my grandmother's house when I was a child, she hid candies under the lid. Except her's was more like depression glass and not red. A few years back I saw a watercolor painting of this exact same bowl by my favorite female artist, Mary Pratt. I would doubt that you are aware who she is as her fame is mostly contained to Canada.
