Hi Everyone,
So I finished my painting, yay!!!!! So happy to have this one finished. The idea for this painting came to me in a dream. Has that ever happened to you?? It was a first for me. I had to figure out where to find the glass balls and how to set up the still life and photograph it. It was an interesting process. I'm not done with these glass spheres, I have some more ideas, we'll see where it takes me.
After finishing the painting comes the arduous task of titling it. Sometimes I feel like all of my creative energy is gone and coming up with a title is just the hardest part of the whole process. I've been wracking my brain. Glass menagerie popped in my mind, but I've never been a Williams fan and I'm not a fan of that play. So I headed to google and did a search for roses in glass. I had absolutely no idea that it's a term for a crack pipe?????? What??????? Evidently at the gas station they sell roses in class tubes, they are used as crack pipes. FANTASTIC, just what I was going for:)) So now I'm officially stuck, any ideas?
When I started this painting the idea of fragility or a secret garden came to mind. I asked my boys if they had a title and Sam, my 4 year old, said "Submarine Roses". Now my husband says I must title it that because Sam came up with it:) But that makes as much sense to me as Miley Cyrus' performance at the VMA's last night, I suspect she may already be familiar with roses in glass:)
So any ideas would be great! I could use some help:))

This is absolutely STUNNING and a title doesn't matter to me.
ReplyDeleteWhen I first saw it and before I read your post I thought you had encased roses in falling raindrops
and loved the whole concept. Glass or raindrops - does it matter when such a beauty is there for the eyes to feast on..
Thank you so much Julie:)))
DeleteAre they peace roses? You could name it Fragile Peace. It is lovely, BTW!
ReplyDeleteStaci, I'm not sure what kind of roses they are. A friend of mine just did a painting of roses and she knew all the names of her roses--I guess I'll be learning something else form this painting:)
DeleteDon't worry about the possible innuendos of meaning Carrie. Your subject is beautiful and will inspire the right connotation. Your work is innocent-- and not subtlely titled. People will take your work at face value and respect the meaning and content. Everything we paint can be subversive! Don't let that hinder you. I was also shocked by Miley's performance. At first-- I thought it was just me.. until I saw the posts this morning. I guess Hannah Montana is gone. I wonder if Billie was upset? Paint on!
ReplyDeleteCarol, thank goodness I didn't google that during the painting, I would have never finished. I was on the fence the entire time I was doing this painting. As far as Miley goes, I'm sure Billie is no angel himself.
DeleteI honestly LOVE Sam's title. He gets my vote too. :D And the painting is gorgeoussssss! Love it.
ReplyDeleteThank you Crystal, I personally think he's just been watching a little too much Sponge Bob Square Pants, but I love that he contributed:)
DeleteOMG, now I have to check out u-tube to find Miley's performance! Had to laugh....but since my hubby was a submariner, I'm a little partial to the name Sam came up with too!:) The painting is incredible - I was wondering if you had something to look at while painting this one, thanks for sharing that. I always have to paint from a photo!
ReplyDeleteKellie that is so cool that your husband was a submariner. I bet it smelled nothing like roses in there:)) I do paint from photos and this was an elaborate set up. I now own 48 glass spheres, so I suspect there will be more paintings where they are the star:)
DeleteYep, he was my little bubble-head!:)
DeleteLooking forward to seeing more spheres - whoot whoot!
Naming this one is sure to give you a brain cramp, Carrie. It is beautiful and since it is roses in spheres why not coin the term "rospherical."
ReplyDeleteIncredible work of art Carrie!! what a wonderful dream concept! i wish i did dream of paintings, but i don't. how about "Glass Dreams?" although, Sam's title is wonderful. Amazing work as always!!!
ReplyDeleteand as far as Ms. Cyrus's performance....it just made me sad. apparently being somewhat talented isn't enough anymore.
Carrie...AWESOME, Stunning...and REAL WOW!
ReplyDeleteGorgeous Carrie! My 15 yr old daughter says "Delicate Beauty" and I thought of "Homage to O'Keefe" and "The Heart Afraid of Breaking" from Bette Midler's song, THE ROSE. Here are the lyrics... maybe some other words jump out at you as a title?
ReplyDelete"The Rose"
Some say love, it is a river
That drowns the tender reed.
Some say love, it is a razor
That leaves your soul to bleed.
Some say love, it is a hunger,
An endless aching need.
I say love, it is a flower,
And you its only seed.
It's the heart afraid of breaking
That never learns to dance.
It's the dream afraid of waking
That never takes the chance.
It's the one who won't be taken,
Who cannot seem to give,
And the soul afraid of dyin'
That never learns to live.
When the night has been too lonely
And the road has been too long,
And you think that love is only
For the lucky and the strong,
Just remember in the winter
Far beneath the bitter snows
Lies the seed that with the sun's love
In the spring becomes the rose.
I agree that you might honor Sam by using his title, but I also see the value of keeping the source of inspiration (dreams) as an option worth exploring from time to time, so perhaps "Dream Vision: Submarine Roses" might fit...with "Dream Vision" reserved as a prefix for future dream-inspired works. Somehow it seems important that the image came to you in a dream. Nice piece. It is curious, evocative and lovely all at the same time.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful Carrie! Sorry my mind is blank as far as a title goes.
ReplyDeleteOh your second to last line made me laugh. I thought I was looking at bubbles (like kids blow) with roses and thought it was so whimsical! Not sure I can ever look at those roses in glass tubes the same way. LOL I didn't know that either. Fleeting? Why? I don't know...bubbles are fleeting...memories can be fleeting...feelings when giving roses can be fleeting...time is fleeting...rose seasons are fleeting...Perhaps I think too much.
ReplyDeleteHmm... How about... 'Dreaming Through Rose Tinted Glasses'...?
ReplyDeleteDoes that make sense to you? I don't know if you have the same sayings in the USA as we do here - but we have a saying - 'seeing life through rose tinted glasses'. If you know that saying it'll make sense :0) And besides - anyone using crack probably is seeing life through rose tinted glasses... well, while it lasts anyway - haha! Not that I would know, I can assure you!
Anyway - I wasn't quite right at guessing what it was... but close enough! And I LOVE it! AMAZING!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :0)
The painting and idea is exceptional and find your dilema funny. Miley Cyrus has everyone talking about her performance. To me it looks as if they are raindrops and the rain drops have reflections in them, maybe "Rose Rain" ...whatever the title, the painting is gorgeous.
ReplyDeleteRose Bubbles, Rosie Spheres, Glass Roses (is that too close to the crack title?), Rosie Glass Bubbles, Rose Paperweights, Preserved Roses, Lasting Roses, Transparency, Transparent Roses, Clearly Roses, Clearly Rosie, Clearly Roses in Glass Doesn't Mean Something Druggie.
ReplyDeleteOh-oh. No more caffeine for me today!
Absolutely beautiful, Carrie! I think of "Fantasy" when I see this...Gorgeous color....
