Hi Everyone,

I just wanted to touch base and let you know why I've been MIA:)) I've been on a whirlwind trip with my 2 little boys. We traveled to Illinois so that I could attend a Carol Carter workshop--I will be blogging about this on Monday--it was beyond fabulous!! I'm inspired, invigorated and can't wait to get back to painting. We then made an unexpected detour to Little Rock, Arkansas to check out a fabulous house! We are in the process of renting the home--the Air Force is sending us there this Summer. I am really excited about this house because it has more than enough room for a studio. I can hardly wait!!!!! We then made our way back to Alabama. My car had a few problems so I spent the majority of the day at the mechanics on our way home, but we made it!

I'm counting down the days until my hubby gets back from Afghanistan, we're down in the double digits, whooo hoooo!!!!! I'm trying to get the house we're living in ready for viewing for new renters, trying to get ready to move, oh yeah I guess I should unpack, get the swimming pool to not look sooooo green, weed the gardens, clean up the winter cob webs on the back porch and get ready for a small art show in March----NO BIGGIE:)))

I'll be back Monday with a regularly scheduled post. I am sooooooo far behind in visiting your blogs, please forgive me--this single parent thing is no joke! Did I mention the 60 cupcakes I made before we left for our trip for the kids school Valentine party (which one Mom had the nerve to ask me if I bought at Wal-Mart because she couldn't figure out how I got the icing to look so perfect)--Seriously!!!!! and the heart shaped crayons we made for everyone's Valentine. I'm trying hard to be the best Mom/Wife/Artist I can be. So bare with me folks, I'll be back to your blogs, I have been reading them just haven't had time to comment!! I miss you guys:( And I thank you for all of your comments! You guys rock!!!

How did you get your start? What’s your artist journey so far?

Carrie, first of all it is a great pleasure being interviewed by you. Thank you.

I was drawing as early as I can remember. My father is a musician and he encouraged me a lot in my childhood. Then in high school my teachers and friends thought I was good at painting and I got a lot of encouragement there too. I had two wonderful art teachers who guided me there. But art was never a serious thing for me that time. Then I went on to do my engineering and painting took a back seat. After engineering I got back to painting, but somehow the relationship was not working anymore. By the way I had been doing oils all this time. Then about four years back by some random coincidence I came across watercolor works of some wonderful artists and the rest as they say is history.

Where were you born?

I was born in Bhubaneswar, capital of Odisha in eastern part of India.

If you could live anywhere where would you live?

Somebody said, “its not the place, but the company that matters.” But yes I wont mind a secluded village somewhere in Goa. J

What’s your favorite thing to paint and why?

No points for guessing this. Landscapes it is. Especially the country side. Nature’s beauty has never fails to inspire.

Could you talk about your painting techniques?

I try to break up a painting into major washes. This part is very important for me because I do not glaze over a lot. Then come the smaller washes. And finally it is about making statement with minimal brush strokes. And yes I also rely on watercolor to paint itself like most watercolor painters.

I love all of your landscapes. Do you paint from sketches, life, or photos or some combo? Could you expand on this?

Thank you Carrie. It is great to know that. I love painting outdoors the most. But it is not always possible. So in that case I work from sketches done on location. In case of photographs too I make sketches first and then I work from the sketch.

How did you arrive at your current style?

I think 90% of the style comes from the personality of the artist. It is always there. The rest 10% which is about the skill set and outlook keeps changing with time. But this 10% is actually very important and one needs to keep working on it for the 90% to present itself clearly. I think I have just started working on that 10% and it will take some good time for my style to get defined on paper.

Do you have a favorite artist? Who has been your biggest inspiration?

Oh there are many. Van Gogh is my all time favorite artist. Among contemporary watercolor artists Milind Mulick, Charles Reid, Joseph Zbukvic, Alvaro Castagnet are my favorite to name a few. Milind sir’s paintings were the reason I got inspired to do watercolors.

What are some of your favorite things or things that are essential to your well being/success as an artist?

To have faith….. When you decide to embark on an artistic journey, you are telling yourself that this will be a never ending and lonely journey which will keep testing you all the time. And the only thing that will carry you ahead on your path is faith.

Do you have go-to paints/colors and brands, what are your favorites?

In brands there are no favorites as such. I use an Indian brand called Camel. I am quite used to it by now. In colors I use 3-4 varieties of primaries. And in secondaries I have an orange, a magenta and two greens.

What are five things you would like to happen in your life in the next five years? Dream big here:)

In no particular order

Get much more painting time
Study under my favorite artists
Go on a painting world tour
Grow as a person
Improve my skills at least a 100 times over

What is your advice for other artists who are just getting started in their career?

An artist’s journey has no destination. It is the journey that has to be enjoyed. There is no alternative to practice, which will improve the quality of this journey. Keep reflecting to check whether the direction is your own. And most importantly have faith.

What is the best advice that you have received as an artist?

This probably is the simplest, but most profound words of advice I received.

“In art no one else can solve one’s problems. One has to find the solutions oneself. One has to find one’s own path. That is when a painter can become an artist. So just keep at it.”

Love Letters

This week's painting is the answer to the February Cook/Waller challenge. The theme was "love letters", appropriate for Valentine's Day! My painting may be a bit unconventional. The "love letters" in my still life are from my husband to his little boys. The photo in this still life is from the day that Brian left for his deployment. I'm so glad I captured this moment. Any time I looked at this photo during the first month Brian was gone I cried. I'm very proud of my hubby sending is boys a letter, letter writing is not a strong suit of his:) The glass globe is positioned to Afghanistan, and one of my favorite parts of the painting are the reflections of the star on the chrome airplane. When I was drawing the composition, I was so caught up in capturing the shapes, I didn't even realize that the stars where there, a happy little revelation that came through as I was painting. Painting this piece was a therapeutic experience, I was able to finish in one day, it really flowed quickly and I was focused the entire time.

On a funny note, I set this still life up in my dining room, which has the perfect window for capturing afternoon sun. I set it up and was waiting for the perfect light. I sporadically would check to see if the light was right throughout the afternoon. I know after setting up many a still life that around 4 p.m. this time of year is when the sun comes pouring through my window. So about that time I went into the dining room and noticed something white billowing from my still life. It took my brain a minute to process what was going on. The glass globe was acting as a magnifying glass and when the sun hit just right the flag started smoking. The thought never crossed my mind that I might burn my house down setting up a still life. I'm so glad that I was right there when it started to catch fire!!! So during the process of trying to capture a heart-warming, patriotic moment, I did the most un-patriotic action, tried to burn a flag. Happy to report that the damage to the flag minimal, I don't think I'm in danger of imprisonment:)

He is on the cover of every art magazine right now. He's a bit of a rock star in the watercolor community. Not only are his works masterful but he is the nicest guy!! How did you get your start? What’s your artist journey so far?

Drawing was almost all I did as a kid . -it was where I found my peace, excitement, heart and soul. … My dream since about the age of 6 was to become an artist and an architect and live in New York City. I’ve been very fortunate in being able to have made that happen

What’s your favorite thing to paint and why?

The light at the intersection of the architecture of man and the architecture of nature. For me - this is where most all the questions worth painting are asked.

In addition to your masterful paintings you do fantastic Architectural renderings. Which came first? How did you end up in that field?

My interests in fine art and in architecture developed simultaneously. In university I majored in both. After graduation, I felt I had to chose one path or the other – I was a practicing architect for several years, then an architectural artist for 20 more. It has only been in recent years (the past 3) that these two sides of my creative self – right and left brain I suppose – began to merge into a cohesive creative vision. I suppose I always loved the ideas – the images - of architecture at least as much as “real” buildings. And now, I am happy to live in the realities of painting.

Do you work from a sketch or do you use photo references?

I never go anywhere without my sketchbook. Nothing compares to on site-observation and on-site painting if possible. About 2/3s of my work is studio-based, but even in these cases, I am always informed by sketches done on site. These are often supplemented with photo reference that I take as well.

How did you arrive at your current style?

Like all artists, my “style” is never a fixed and static thing – but always in a state of evolution. Of late, I am dedicated to editing and simplification – painting much larger and faster – always trying to tell the story of my painting is as direct and immediate way as possible. As an architectural artist trained in the formal Beaux-Arts traditions of slow, methodical washes, and precise details, I have longed to break free and find a more personal, more expressive and intuitive way of telling the stories of my paintings. Three years ago, when I was fortunate to be able to paint with Joseph Zbukvic, I began at long last to understand some ways that I might get closer to that goal.

Could you talk about your painting techniques?

All paintings have a story to tell. These days, for me those stories are always ones where “light” is the star. In my teaching. I emphasize to students the importance of strong compositions of darks and lights – finding the “light paths” in a painting. Also, I stress the importance of trying not to paint the object or scene that you see, but rather how you feel about that object or scene; and more importantly, the light that illuminates them.

Having a clear idea of the light in a final work is critical for the painter even before a brush ever touches paper. Doing quick value sketches is one way to identify these areas of light. And since watercolor can be seen as a “subtractive” technique (that is, the only real white or light in a painting comes from the white of the paper ) so every value or tone added subtracts from the available light available to the artist.

So to that end, my techniques have skewed more toward the impressionistic, atmospheric and evocative. Combinations and ranges – within the same painting – of very loose wet-in-wet techniques to almost opaque dry brush applications help amplify the dynamic and expressive range of any painting.

Do you have a favorite artist? Who has been your biggest inspiration?

Oh gosh – so many – and in so many creative fields. In painting, the abstract expressionists, Rothko and Motherwell tell such evocative stories that challenge the viewer to get lost in and unravel the mystery of their work. Of course, Turner’s use of mystical light is always so powerfully moving. The watercolorists Sargent, Seago, Cotman, Wade, Castagnet, and Zbukvic are key. And the powerful value compositions and emotive light of architectural artist Hugh Ferriss are worth the investigative time of any artist. But almost as important to the development of my work are the composers Ralph Vaughn Williams and Arvo Part.

What are some of your favorite things or things that are essential to your well being/success as an artist?

As the two sides of my creative self began to merge, I began to realize that anything we do informs to some degree everything we do. My efforts as a painter are deeply affected by all aspects of my life: the love of my family and friends, my dog, riding my racing bike down the coast, yoga, the New York Times crossword puzzle, reading a great book, watching good (and bad) movies, and music music music,

Do you have go-to paints/colors, what are your favorites?

Lately, I prefer Holbein pigments . But I also use a few Windsor Newton and Daniel Smith colors. I tend to avoid the intense, staining colors such as Windsor greens or blues in favor of more sediment-based, earthy tones.

What are five things you would like to happen in your life in the next five years? Dream big here:)

Well, I try to be open to the unknown possibilities that life offers and to not to plan my life in that way. But I am so grateful for every day that I can paint, I hope that life offers me at least five more years to explore my possibilities as a painter.

What is your advice for other artists who are just getting started in their career?

Find your passion and follow it relentlessly. If it is to be a painter – then paint!

Video Problems

Hi Everyone,

This week I've been trying to figure out how to get a professional looking video of my work in progresses. I'm aware that if I had a mac that there is a good movie making program, but I don't own a mac yet. Until then I've been researching. I've barely begun to scratch the surface, but most on-line programs are a little pricey. I made the above video through animoto. I paid for the smaller package which was $30 a year. They are very professional looking but unless you dish out $250 a year you have a lot branding showing up. They do offer $39.99 a month, but I was worried that it could be a nightmare canceling after 1 month. I may have to try it and see how it goes. The most expensive package offers no branding and access to all their templates and music.

Above is another version of the same video. I don't like that you can't change the speed at which the pics are on the screen, at least not that I have found. Since I wasn't thrilled with the branding or the speed I tried other alternatives. Through the you tube page they have links to several services, but without paying for another program I couldn't find any free options. Does anyone know of any?

I did find a royalty free music site. It's a library of music that can be used, there is no charge they do have a donation box if you choose to do so. It's a lot of classical and instrumental, which I think is perfect for artistic needs. The site is called Musopen

Trying to get my blog posted today I ran into several problems trying to get my animoto video to post. I never could get it to upload to you tube. I finally got it on my blog after multiple attempts. I did get my video to post to facebook with minimal problems. There has to be an easier way!

I would love to hear your input. Help, please:))

The Original Blizzard

The theme this month for the Cook-Waller challenge was "winter". Now living in the South that word doesn't have the impact that it does in other areas of the country, so it took a little thinking. My brother was in town over the holidays and I asked him what word comes to mind when I say winter and he immediately said blizzard. I responded, "The only blizzard you're going to get around here is at Dairy Queen". So there you have it the answer to my challenge:) It is after all "the original blizzard" it says so right on the cup! My painting is up for auction through DPW.

Crystal had a different approach, living in Utah, I would expect she sees a little more of this than a DQ blizzard. She answered the challenge with a beautiful landscape, which is a departure for her. I think it is beautiful and dramatic and I love her sky. Check out her blog here.

I also put the finishing touches on my painting "Tall Drink of Water" (thank you Kathy Cousart for the title). My stars on the little labels weren't aligned, and it's never good when your stars aren't aligned. I had to fix that. I also softened the background a little. Also had other little details I wanted to finish.

We also found out that we'll be moving to Little Rock, Arkansas after Brian gets back. So if anyone knows anything about the art scene there I would love to be in the know:)

Friday Feature: James Green

Today I want to introduce you to a fabulous artist that also resides in Alabama. Even though we're from the same state we met via facebook. James and I are both part facebook group Behind the Brush. James' artwork caught my eye because he paints a lot of aviation art. Since the Air Force is such a big part of my life I find these works fascinating.

How did you get your start?

Basically, I simply stumbled into trying to “make a go” of being a freelance artist. In December of 2007 I had just graduated from Northeast Alabama Community College where I had received Associates Degrees in Art (Art Studio – BFA Prep), Business Administration, & History Education. During the first three months of 2008 I couldn’t find work: I was over qualified for any job I interviewed for in this area. Even my previous employer in Chattanooga – Vincent Printing Company -didn’t want to pay me what I was worth with the additional training & education, so in the Spring of 2008 I decided to pursue my dream & open my own art studio/business.

What’s your artist journey so far?

Well, after spending over twenty years - the prime of my life - in the Army as an airborne/air assault soldier, I guess one could say that I am a retired soldier who now tries to create quality art. My values, beliefs, work ethic & sense of professionalism that I subscribe to are those of a soldier (or any other career military person). I still operate as an artist with the same set of ethics that I acquired from my service in the Army. I would like to honor those who have or are currently serving through my art. That is why I am proud that I have been accepted into the Air Force Art Program as of last August. I still have yet to be requested to create something for the Air Force as of this writing, but with Obama’s agenda to cut the military, there have been fewer opportunities for artists to do work for the AFAP due to the budget cuts.

Creatively, these past two to three years have been a sort of “watershed” for me; I’ve had some great creative successes, and these have translated into limited commercial success, but I have learned that I don’t have to accept being “pigeon-holed” into only one genre of art versus another. I now consider myself a “generalist” when it comes to my direction in art; I was initially trained to be an illustrator, and because illustrators are required to render anything well, that is why I have gotten into doing a variety of different things, including portraiture, railroad & automotive art, wildlife & landscapes, instead of just military or aviation art.

Where were you born?

Richmond, California. My Dad was sent out there as a contractor working on a project for the Navy’s oiler depot in the San Francisco Bay area. Mom was about 5 months pregnant with me at the time, so that’s how I came to be born there. When the contract work was finished, they returned with me back to Huntsville, Alabama. Being less than a year old at the time, I have no memory of California and don’t consider myself to be a Californian.

What’s your favorite thing to paint and why?

Usually, my favorite thing to paint is whatever is on my easel that I am working on at the moment. But I must confess that my affinity for military & aviation subject matter is always strong! J

Could you talk about your painting techniques?

My painting techniques are a result of being mentored by Northwest aviation artist Bob Hill. He was a master of using the airbrush & had a motto, “Whatever works!” If it was a technique that would help you do a better job of rendering with skill, while not compromising the quality of your work, then he was all for it. His open minded approach has led me to always try different mediums & techniques. That’s why I switch around a lot.

Where did your fascination with aviation art begin?

I was a “latch-key” child from the age of seven. In the afternoons after school I would build model airplanes, and then draw pictures of them. The historical background of the aircraft printed on the model kit instructions usually led to a greater journey of discovery at the school & public library to do even more research. The more I learned, the more I wanted to learn!

How did you arrive at your current style?

I pursue realism. I merely try to paint & draw what I see. I endeavor to truly see what it is that I am looking at when I am rendering it.

Do you have a favorite artist? Who has been your biggest inspiration?

Northwest aviation artist Bob Hill. Bob & I met in 1992 at the Yakima Air Fair when I was assigned to Yakima Training Center at Yakima, Washington. He & I became close & when I was preparing in 1998 for my upcoming retirement from the Army, Bob encouraged me to attend the Graphics Technology program at Perry Tech where he worked as an instructor.

What are some of your favorite things or things that are essential to your well being/success as an artist?

Feeling validated by people who are fellow artists, or who are well informed & knowledgeable art patrons, that I am doing quality work. And if what I do sells, that helps a lot too!

Do you have go-to paints/colors, what are your favorites?

In airbrush colors I typically use Medea COM-ART or Badger acrylics. Gouache - Windsor & Newton. Oils - Windsor & Newton and Grumbacher (which I typically mix with Windsor & Newton Liquin). Colored pencils – Rexell-Derwent & Prismacolor.

Gain acceptance into the Portrait Society of America & break into the portrait & figurative art field.
Always be known as an artist who not only does quality work, but is good to honor his word as an artist & businessman.

What is your advice for other artists who are just getting started in their career?

Know that what may work for others, may not work for you. There is no “cut & dried” formula for being successful as an artist. How well you & your works are accepted will vary greatly on the audience you are trying to produce for, so get to know your audience.

Hi Everyone,

My messy paint boxes

I've had several questions lately about my process, so I thought I'd share a little of that today, answer some questions, and I want to know about your process. I really find it interesting, I think everyone may approach their art a little differently, so I would love to know how you create.

So here are some questions and answers.

1. What is your painting process?

I paint from right to left, I'm not sure why. I didn't even realize that's how I painted until I started taking WIP pictures. I think I do this to avoid dragging my arm across my pencil drawing, but like I said I wasn't really aware I painted that way.

2. Are you left handed (because I paint from right to left)? No, I'm right handed. I think I start on the right so I won't be dragging my arm and hand across the pencil lines smearing the graphite onto my paper. After I have a section painted I cover it in paper towel. I have my painting draped off kind of like a surgery with a small opening over the section I'm working on.

3. . Interesting to see how you build the painting up in sections Carrie ..is that something you've developed to fit in with your young family or have you always painted with this approach?

I have always painted this way, I believe it stems from impatience. I really need to see if my painting is working. If I lay down washes over the entire paper it really overwhelms me. So I finish a section at a time and I feel that I'm accomplishing something and I can see if I'm getting the desired results.

4. How do you get such dark, darks and such intense colors.

For most of my darks in the background the really saturated black sections I use a combination of Indigo (very staining), sepia and occasionally I throw in some lamp black (but it is sedimentary so it's hard to get a nice even wash), in the case of my last painting I mixed some of the greens I was using to the blacks to make a cohesive color story. I also don't use a wet on wet technique very often. I mix more saturated mixtures of colors.

5. Do you use fresh paint each time?

That would be a big fat NO! That would be such a waste of paint, in my opinion. I also really love some of the colors that mix and mingle on my palette. One of my strong points is that I can very easily match a color that I mixed. I don't write it down it just is a natural color sense.

6. What do you use for your palette? and what brand paints do you use?

My first set of professional paints were Schmincke brand ( I bought them when I lived in Germany) and they only sold half pans and full pans. So I have a large set of Schmincke large pans and the enamel boxes that they came in. I have 4 of these sets and I use the case they're in for a palette. I also recently purchased some metal cafeteria trays from a military surplus store and I love, love, love them for mixing my paints. They aren't white which I was worried might throw me, but I've had no problem adjusting. I also use Daniel Smith paints, my favorite, go to colors are the DS Quinacridone paints. They are gorgeous and I love them!

7. How long does it take you to complete a painting?

My larger paintings normally take 2-3 weeks. My smaller paintings take a couple of days.

8. Do you paint from life or photographs.

I set up all of my still life subjects using only natural daylight and very strong lighting. I then photograph the still life (I'm talking 200-300 digital pics) and then choose my favorites put them in Photoshop, crop them and saturate them. I then paint from my manipulated photo.

9. How long have you been painting?

I've always been interested in art and have always been into some kind of creative project. But, it wasn't until after college that I picked up my first professional watercolor set and a book on how to "The Ultimate Watercolor Course--Simple Techniques To Paint Like The Pros)" that I really started to paint. I painted for a couple of years at that time, then went on to paint murals with acrylics in peoples homes and work at my Mom's frame shop. After I had kids I picked it back up again. It wasn't until that point I got serious about it. That was 2 years ago.

10. What attracts you to painting still life paintings specifically glass?

I first painted a still life last year as an answer to a challenge that an artist was hosting. I was hooked after that. I then wanted to challenge myself so I added glass into the still life and I was hooked once again. I love the challenge. It amazes me how many little abstract paintings are in a realistic painting. It is really painting shapes, forms and colors at it's best.

11. How do you keep your kids out of your paint?

I don't! I'm one of those Mom's that doesn't believe in putting away the breakables or bubble wrapping the coffee table. They have learned from an early age that it's Mommy's art and paints. I will allow them to "help" me some times. Steven has added paint to a lot of my works, in an extremely supervised manner. They both have their own art supplies and access to do art any time they want to. So far I've only had one painting ruined and it was in the beginning stages, Sam decided to add to my drawing--and that was about 6 months ago--he's much older and wiser now (the ripe old age of 2.5) :)

San Pellegrino or Tall Drink of Water

Hi Everyone,

I'm 98% of the way finished with this piece. I have a little tweaking left to do. I'm trying to decide if I should stick with the title "San Pellegrino"--straight forward or go with "Tall Drink of Water"? What do you think? Kathy Cousart left that phrase in a comment last week and I thought it was fitting and clever:)

My painting "The Night Before Christmas" was awarded Outstanding Watercolor for the FASO Bold Brush Competition month of December. I'm thrilled and super excited about this:)

And on the home-front we're 2.5 months into Brian's 6 month deployment, almost half way over:)) And the big news is Sam, my 2 year old, peed in the potty for the first time last night. If you're not a parent you may not be as excited about this, I understand, but for all of those that have been there or are yet to be there, that is a major accomplishment. I for see a diaper free future, woooo hooooo:)))

Friday Feature: Barbara Davis

Hi Everyone,

One of the fun parts of moving around all the time in this crazy military lifestyle is meeting lots of new people. It is so great to meet artists from all over. Barbara Davis is a fabulous artist that I have met during my time in Montgomery, Alabama. She paints in plein air and I have never seen such beautiful skies. Not only is her work breathtaking, but you have never met a nicer person. She is beautiful inside and out and her outlook and demeanor just pour through onto her canvases.

How did you get your start? What’s your artist journey so far?

I have always loved art and, probably like most of my artist friends, it all started with a big box of crayons!! Still love ‘em! Thank you, Crayola!

Fast forward to the 9^th grade – My art teacher, my favorite teacher, was killed in a car accident at the end of the year. Little did I know, the day before she died she had turned in my name to receive the ninth grade art student award. This event really spurred me on to continue.

I ended up majoring in art in college, working after graduation as an illustrator at an advertising agency. After things went sour for that company, I worked at non-art related jobs for sixteen years except for a brief year-long ill-timed stint when I tried to make it as a full-time portrait artist. I worked at a bank for 13 years – all the time painting, mostly portraits– on the side. Something clicked in 2004, when I turned 40! I knew if my art career was ever going to happen, I was going to have to do more to get there!

I don’t believe in coincidences, so I know God led me to pick up an American Artist magazine for a little beach reading the summer of 2004. In it I saw an article about plein air painting and feature article on artist Patti Andre. I knew that’s how I wanted to paint! The next month, I bought a French easel and starting painting outside. I was hooked! My painting improved dramatically and I won my first award. That’s when I became confident that this could happen! Every weekend was spent plein air painting from that time forward.

I got involved with the Alabama Plein Air Painters and met some wonderful supportive artists who shared my passion. I also became involved with the Montgomery Art Guild. The support of my artist friends has been so important to me!

It seems like a dream come true that six years after my first venture into plein air painting and my commitment to make this art career succeed, I am painting full time!

What’s your favorite thing to paint and why?

My favorite thing to paint is the wide open sky for several reasons. It’s such a spiritual thing to me to see the sky unfold each hour, each day, each season. On most days, it is breathtaking. It has been a challenge and a delight to try and capture clouds and light. Painting the subtle changes in color temperature and value and the ever-present struggle to not make those clouds look pasted on is difficult, but so much fun!

Could you talk about your painting techniques?

I paint as often as I can outside en plein air. This process really teaches me so much. I truly feel like I learn something every time I paint from life. Of course, I also work in the studio and the process is really the same for both. I paint wet-on-wet, alla prima usually. I work from dark to light and usually begin with an underpainting in transparent red oxide.

Do you have a favorite artist? Who has been your biggest inspiration?

I have several oil painters in our region that I have taken workshops from and learned so much from – in particular, Perry Austin and Roger Dale Brown. I love their work! Roger has inspired me so much because of his story. He has worked so hard and has quickly become a very accomplished and well-known artist. He set goals for himself, i.e., paint 365 paintings the first year, for example. He is a fabulous teacher, too! I also love the work of Kathryn Stats, Scott Christensen, Richard Schmid, Rose Frantzen and study from them any way I can – by video or studying their work in magazines, books, and on-line.

What are some of your favorite things or things that are essential to your well being/success as an artist?

My husband, John! He’s my favorite guy and definitely essential to my well being and my success! He’s my greatest cheerleader, my security guard when I’m painting outdoors, my helper, my marketer –he helps me dream! He’s behind me 100% - even after years and years of listening to me whine about wanting to paint full-time! I am very blessed to have him in my life and I know it!!

Do you have go-to paints/colors, what are your favorites?

Although I use several different brands, I primarily use Gamblin paints. I am very partial to sap green. My sap green color chart is my favorite! I love the effect it has on so many colors.

How do you balance your teaching life with your art career?

At this point, I try not to commit to long-term teaching assignments, but prefer to teach periodic workshops or four-week courses. I enjoy teaching, but I don’t ever want it to interfere with my painting. I will say I learn a lot when I teach because I am researching and studying for my teaching, so my art benefits as well!

What are five things you would like to happen in your life in the next five years? Dream big here:)

Okey dokey! Here goes!

Expand my market and gain representation in a gallery in the western US market.
Become a sought-after workshop instructor.
Build a studio! My current space is tiny!
Paint the landscapes I see in my head! I want to be able to achieve what I am visualizing!
Take a couple of workshops with some of the country’s best artists!

What is your advice for other artists who are just getting started in their career?

Paint all you can and paint all you can from life! If you’re like I was and have to work at a non-art related job while you build your career, it may be hard finding the time to paint. Commit to painting 5 minutes a day. The little problem is that once you paint for 5 minutes, you’re probably not going to stop! Don’t give up! You are the only one who can make it happen!

What is the best advice that you have received as an artist?

The best advice I ever received came from my art professor and adviser at Auburn University Montgomery, Phil Coley. He said, “if you want to learn to paint, you just paint, paint and paint.” Sounds simple, huh? So true, though! Another similar adage, but I don’t know where it originated…”You’re only as good as the miles of canvas behind you”! Keep at it!!!!

San Pellegrino-- Still A Work In Progress

Hi Everyone,

I'm still plugging away at my painting. I almost broke one of my goals last night. I vowed not to pull any all-nighters this year. Last night when the munchkins were snug as a bug in a rug I was so tempted to stay up until I was done. But the thing is I would have so payed for that today. A 5 year old and 2 year old aren't quite so understanding about being in a painting groove. And since neither of them ever nap, that mean no nap for Mommy. So I was a good little artist and packed away the brushes at 2 a.m. giving me just enough shut eye to function today:)

On another note I found the perfect place to photograph my work at night. My laundry room. It has fluorescent lights and it provides enough light for my camera to at least pick up a fairly good representation. A friend says she puts a pink light bulb and a blue light bulb in her fluorescent lights to simulate day light. Anyone know if this works? Also the washer and dryer are the perfect height to prop my board up so that I get a great angle. Of course I would figure this out when I only have 6 more months before we move. Fingers crossed I have a designated art area in my next house, at least a place to store my ever accumulating art stuff!

How did you get your start?

I started painting at around 19 out of sheer boredom one cold Winter evening. Things slowly evolved from there and I started selling some of my work in a home furnishings shop my parents owned in the Atlanta area. I started painting/blogging full time 5 years ago.

What’s your artist journey so far?

It's been an amazing experience. Having been self-taught, I don't have any formal classroom experience or training, so I've had to just learn by doing. Life is 90% work and consistency in the mundane and about 10% inspiration and mountaintop moments. I remember painting a pastoral landscape in the early days that included sheep ....to this day, my brother jokingly calls it "Spuds Grazing" because the sheep were so "flat" they looked like potatoes. I have always been a very visual person and loved art supplies and art as far back as I can remember. Most rceently, the clients I've had and the connections I've made through blogging have been a tremendous boost to my career and provided huge inspiration and support.

What’s your favorite thing to paint and why?

I am actually really enjoying breaking away from my years of realism and dabbling a bit more in abstracts of late. The freedom to focus on color is kind of liberating.

Could you talk about your artistic style

That's a bit difficult for me to answer, as I don't really exactly know how to label it. I guess it's generally sort of colorful and eclectic, but based in realism.

Meryl Streeps, “It’s Complicated” is one of my favorite movies, I know your artwork is in the movie, that is so exciting! How did that come about?

An assistant to Nancy Meyer's (the producer) set decorator contacted me through Etsy, saying that Nancy Meyers had specifically requested 2 prints of mine for an unnamed film shooting in Brooklyn at the time. She claimed her credit card wouldn't work with PayPal and she needed them overnighted. My first instinct was that she was scamming me and I almost ignored her, but I am very glad I didn't!

Do you have a favorite artist? Who has been your biggest inspiration?

I have many favorite artists, but especially enjoy Mark Hampton, Bonnard and Matisse.

My biggest inspiration was my parents, because they both painted when I was young and encouraged me to try it. They have also been my biggest fans and supporters, even when I thought I had absolutely no talent.

What are some of your favorite things or things that are essential to your well being/success as an artist?

My number one essential for well-being is my relationship with and daily dependance on Jesus Christ. He gave me any gifts or talents I have and He keeps me sane, centered and at peace, even when things are most chaotic or difficult. ultimately I have confidence that He is in total control and loves me more than I can ever grasp, so, because of that, everything works together for my good, even at times when it looks like life's a disaster.

My family. They all mean the world to me and keep me grounded.

Good food, garlic and cooking.

Hot showers and clean towels.

My computer and printer.

I am not a loyalist to any one paint, but tend to use gouache and acrylics mostly, though I am experimenting with oils as well. I love bright and saturated colors, especially, pinks, oranges, greens and blues.

Update!!! WIP and Give Away

Hi Everyone,

San Pellegrino WIP full sheet watercolor

I trust that your week is going well. It is gray and rainy here and it is making me tired. I need my sunshine!!! I'm plugging away on my San Pellegrino bottles, but I'm feeling like they're in that awkward adolescent phase right now. I have almost started over sooooo many times, but I'm not giving up yet. I will at least finish the first bottle and then re-evaluate.

Oh and I a few people ask what greens I'm using. At the moment I'm using Schmincke Pthalo Green, Schmincke Sap Green and Daniel Smith Cascade green. For the darks I'm using, DS Payne's Gray, DS Lamp Black and DS Indigo

I'm also wondering why it is I seem to procrastinate when it comes to competition entries. I have several deadlines piling up and I'm scrambling to reach the finish line. Definitely going to work on this, these deadlines are not a surprise and I do have an entire year to plan soooooo--Major goal for next year---PLAN AHEAD!!! I want to have things finished a month out so I have some breathing room and a cushion for those unexpected things like commissions that pop up.

I'm hoping that 2012 is treating you well!!! I'm posting my WIP. I'll share my progress again on Wednesday. It's a big guy. I'm working on a full sheet. It's been a slow start because I've not used a mostly green palette before and I had to work out the colors, but now I'm on a roll.

I have let the New Year start without acknowledging my 2nd Blogiversary. In some ways I can not believe it has been 2 years and in others I feel like this is such a part of my life and I've made such wonderful friends that I've been at this forever. As I roll into my 3rd year I am proud of what I have accomplished. I feel renewed and even more motivated. I was worried that at the end of year 1 I would be burned out by my commitment to paint everyday, but it has become a wonderful habit. This blog has held me accountable and you wonderful people have pushed me along and been there every step of the way! I can not Thank You enough!!!!

For my first Feature of 2012 I have a very special artist. Her watercolors are absolutely gorgeous! Her use of color is watercolor at it's best, she layers and mixes and makes the most creative and beautiful compositions.

How did you get your start?

When I was a kid, my mom figured out that the best way to keep me entertained was a sketchpad. My parents, both accountants, went through the Depression in their formative years, so Fine Art was not an option for me. I studied Graphic and Advertising Design at the University of Delaware. I still make my living, in part, as an art director.

What’s your artist journey so far?

A few years ago, I just started entering art shows, not on a whim but as a self-challenge. Not too long after, my artistic life-changing experience came, following a workshop I took with John Salminen. He recommended me for an article in Watercolor Artist entitled, “Ones to Watch.” After that, it became more than just a personal passion, as I started to gain more recognition. This year, the NBC TV show Prime Suspect bought a few of my prints. Now I’m being contacted more about painting projects than design projects.

Where were you born?

The Bronx, but I spent most of my wonder years in New Jersey, where I still live.

If you could live anywhere, where would you live?

New York City. Home has always been where family and friends are.

What’s your favorite thing to paint, and why?

Urban scenes. I love type and iconic structures. I look for design elements that I can play with, using positive and negative shapes.

Could you talk about your painting techniques?

Step 1:  Go out and take photos.

Step 2:  Photoshop. Here’s where I work on getting a strong design.

Step 3:  Get a piece of paper and start drawing. I use Strathmore Wet Media Board because it takes a beating.

Step 4:  Paint. I start with wet on wet for the background, and then slowly add details with layers. Wet Media Board doesn’t soak in the paint, which gives that soft wet on wet look. I can also pretty much get back to the white of the paper without destroying the board.

You have such a fabulous style. Tell us a little about how you evolved into this painting style.

My job as an Art Director was to sell a concept. It was important to make sure the client got the concept visually. Before computers, I used magic markers to create conceptual layouts for clients. If one wanted to go home, one learned quickly how to do this fast and loose. All of this carried over into my style.

I love the blooms and gorgeous color combinations; you really seem to love to play with your paint, how did you arrive at your current style?

My secrets are, one, a messy palette, and, two, embracing happy accidents.

Do you have a favorite artist? Who has been your biggest inspiration?

I love so many artists that I can’t just name one.  Andy Warhol started my love affair with graphic design and type. Bernie Fuchs and Bart Forbes: When I was growing up. I used to anticipate TV Guide’s weekly arrival in the mail. If the cover was an illustration, I was in heaven -- usually it was by one of these guys. John Salminen: The “Bruce Springsteen of the Watercolor World.” Facebook: Every day, when I open Facebook, I go into a candy store of talent and inspiration.

What are some of your favorite things or things that are essential to your well being/success as an artist?

Having a good life. My husband. New York City. American Idol. Macbook Pro. iPad. And Diet Coke.

Do you have go-to paints/colors, what are your favorites?

Burnt sienna, quinacridone orange and manganese blue. Anything quinacridone is all right with me.

How do you balance your teaching life with your art career?

Add to that, “…and with being an art director and a newlywed.” Get up in the morning and breathe. After that, supportive husband, good friends, and family who do not bill me.

You're the boss. Nobody sees the photograph or subject matter that you're painting; it’s your job to interpret it.

Have you always painted in watercolor, or have you tried other mediums?

I explored all mediums, but always preferred watercolor. It’s portable, and easiest to clean up. Also, it’s the only medium I know that has a mind of it’s own, whose physical properties require the artist to cede control to it. I consider the watercolor a partner when I paint.

Hi Everyone,

I have just burned the midnight oil to complete my painting "The Night Before Christmas". Crystal Cook and I pose a challenge to each other each month and this month it was my turn to come up with the theme. Immediately the word "Believe" popped into my head. So that was the inspiration for our entries this month. Ironically even though I came up with the challenge I really had no idea what I was going to paint. But my idea quickly came to me as I was watching my little boys get so excited about Christmas. These are fun years. It is such a magical time when you have little people to experience the Holidays with. So even though the components of my still life were becoming clearer to me I still had to round it all up. That took some time. We didn't own a copy of The Night Before Christmas that I could readily find, so off to the bookstore we went. Once I settled on a copy that I liked the cover art, I then had to bake cookies and find the perfect dishes to display the cookies and milk in. I of course went to my old standby the Candlewick dishes. Oh, and I also had to wait for a day with sunshine to get the perfect photo reference. There was a lot of planning in this painting. But finally it all came together. So I present to you my answer to believe "The Night Before Christmas"

Hi Everyone,

Nostalgia on page 36 of the Dec issue!! So exciting!!!!!

This weekend I got the most exciting package in the mail from France. I received the newest copy of the best selling French magazine Pratique Des Arts. And if that wasn't exciting enough my painting "Nostalgia" was on page 36 in the International Portfolio section!! The editor said it would be in this issue but until you see it in person it just doesn't seem real. So needless to say I'm over the moon about this! One of my goals for 2010 was to be in a major publication, I'm not sure I thought this was attainable, but you gotta dream big, right:)) It feels great to receive validation. Not only that but our blogger buddy Kara Bigda was also in the issue. That's some kind of special bond:)))))

I also wanted to share that I received a Gallery Award in Randy Higbee's 6"Squared exhibit in Costa Mesa CA, earlier this month!! Extremely happy, I also have a sale from the show.

And for a little Christmas cheer here's a picture of my boys with Santa. This is the first year Steven, my 5 yr old would dare to go near Santa. And because his brother would go so would Sam. And let me tell you Steven didn't waste any time spitting out his list, which I will add was a surprise to Mommy so there may have to be another order filled at the North Pole. Steven also was super concerned about where Santa had parked his Sleigh. So cute:)

Iain came on to my radar about a year ago when we were both in the Louisiana Watercolor Society's International Show. I noticed that he also lived in Alabama so we became fb buddies and I got to meet him and his lovely wife in person in New Orleans at the LWS reception. Iain has a great sense of humor and of course does amazing things in watercolor.

How did you get your start? What’s your artist journey so far?

My father is a watercolorist. Muir Stewart. I’ve watched him paint all of my life. That being said, I do consider myself mainly self taught. I know that sounds strange, but my father was not big on formal lessons. I’ve had maybe two or three from him between the ages of 10 and 18. I didn’t start painting in earnest until University. I am trained as an Architect and quickly moved into architectural rendering after graduation. Presentation was always a strong point of mine. I had thoughts of doing gallery work, but found myself too busy. That all changed in the recession. Looking back I wouldn’t change a thing on my end. I was able to commit almost full time to a serious exploration of how I really want to paint. If I look at work from even 3 years ago I feel that I’m light years past it now.

Where were you born?

I was born in Glasgow, Scotland.

If you could live anywhere where would you live?

I’m fairly happy where I am now, but if we’re opening up real dreaming here I’d have multiple residences and do sort of a migratory progression to each one. Still, Europe, is really high on the list if we’re choosing just one.

What’s your favorite thing to paint and why?

Cityscapes. No question. As an architect I’m drawn to the built environment naturally. Still, I think it has a lot to do with how different elements become layers in such distinct ways. The buildings themselves are static, but at street level you have this beautiful orchestration of movement and energy. I also find the depth that can be achieved by taking a view from the middle of the street fascinating, although taking reference photography can get tricky.

Could you talk about your painting techniques?

My style seems to evolve rather quickly so I’m rarely tied to a specific technique. I’m very willing to test new ideas and to a certain extent embrace the failure as much, if not more, than success. I tell my students if you’re going to muck it up then make it a spectacular failure. I try to hold on to that myself.

As far as actual technique goes I believe you must build from strong drawing skills. Real comfort with a pencil will naturally extend to your brush. In drawing interest is achieved by mixing line weight, stroke, and texture. This is the same with watercolor. If I find myself becoming too careful that is usually a good indicator that on the next pass I need to loosen things up.

Do you always work from a sketch or do you use photo references?

Both. A camera is invaluable when time is limited or you want to document a lot of information. The problem that arises when only using a camera is I find that I don’t actually become immersed in a subject. I need to work on location to continue to learn how to simplify what I see and get at the heart of the subject. I don’t think this can be done by only referencing photography. The work I do on site is selfish and all about me and how I see things. I know it will rarely be viewed by others. It’s my favorite work.

How did you arrive at your current style?

This is where we do get back to my father. He likens my artistic education to that of a farmer’s son. The son watches the father milk the cows and bring in the hay, or what have you, and he learns how to do those tasks. I’ve watched my father paint my entire life and there is a huge amount of him in me. I think I’ve only recently begun to paint in what could be called “my style.” The breaking away from my father is crucial in claiming my own style. I think it’s safe to say I don’t paint like him now. You’ll always see a little Muir in my work and I’m happy in that, but it’s more important that you see me.

Do you have a favorite artist? Who has been your biggest inspiration?

What are some of your favorite things or things that are essential to your well being/success as an artist?

Drive. The need to paint. Taking joy in the process of painting and allowing yourself to be selfish without feeling guilty about it. That last one requires a very special partner in life. Painting time is my time. It’s my job, but it’s more than that. It changes how I view the world. Once you learn how to use your artist’s eye you can never go back. Most importantly you have to enjoy, and I mean damned well love, what you do.

Do you have go-to paints/colors, what are your favorites?

Winsor and Newton without a doubt. My go to colors are cobalt blue, burnt siena, french ultramarine, raw umber, yellow ochre, light red, alizarin crimson, and neutral tint.

What are five things you would like to happen in your life in the next five years? Dream big here:)

Can you do watercolor in zero gravity? I made a 5 year plan 3 years ago. I’ve checked a lot of dreams as realized off of that list. I am unbelievably thankful for the direction my career is moving in. Quite simply I want to make a comfortable living doing what I love. I think that’s dreaming big. Ok, and maybe a few homes scattered here and there where I could have a sort of traveling artists colony thingy set up. Also a sailboat. A big one.

What is your advice for other artists who are just getting started in their career?

Plastics my boy. There’s a future in plastics. Seriously though, don’t do it unless you love it and be prepared to do other things in support of it. Find someone who is abundantly patient and don’t ask them to look at your work as soon as they walk in the door. Most importantly, enjoy it. I don’t subscribe to the tortured artist thing myself. It seems to work for Morrissey, but I have to like what I’m doing.

What is the best advice that you have received as an artist?

Paint a sky a day.

It's hard to admit this but. . . .

Hi Everyone,

Are you knee deep in Holiday preparations? Are you as behind as I am? Sooooo, I hate to admit this but, I haven't picked up a paint brush in 3 weeks:( Am I going to remember how to paint?

I am still having my Holiday Sale until 12/15. Great gift ideas starting at $15.

It all started by going out of town for Thanksgiving and I just have been behind the power curve ever since then. But that is okay, in lieu of painting I have been having so much fun with my boys decorating, making cookies, attempting to build a gingerbread house (we'll be giving that a second attempt this week). We have decked our halls and it's feeling pretty jolly at our house! So today I'm going to give you a virtual tour of our home and let you see what we've been up too:)

We got our outdoor decorating done first. Steven my 5 yr old is obsessed with the inflatable decorations so this year we went from 1 snowman to an entire family of snowmen. We now have a Daddy, Mommy, Sam and Steven snowman:))

I always love to have our entrance to our home very festive, with the assistance of my boys who were terrific helpers we got it accomplished!

Steven, Sam and I made some ornaments. They are adorable snowman ornaments using their hand-prints. I saw these on pinterest and I'm going to make them with Steven's class this week. I just love things that have their hand-prints on them. They grow up so fast and I love looking back to see just how far they've come.

Steven's also been very inspired to do some snowman drawings. These are his interpretation of our outdoor decor.

And I bet you didn't know we had some celebrity help. Buzz Lightyear helped us to Infinity and Beyond.

This week I'm featuring Kara Bigda. As soon as I saw her work I loved it immediately. Each piece has such a great aesthetic. She has a wonderful eye for composition. They also have a lovely, inviting, homey feel.

How did you get your start? What’s your artist journey so far?

For as long as I can remember I always loved to draw and create: spending hours drawing scenes described in the books I was reading, and making books and “fashion catalogs” using Betty and Veronica from the Archie comics as my models. (I would trace their bodies and design new outfits for them and describe the clothing in the margins. How goofy is that?) Also I had a great uncle who was a cartoonist and when we’d visit him he’d give me “art lessons.” He was fabulous at drawing the figure. As I mainly focus on still life today, let’s just say I wasn’t his most successful student . . . but he was a dear man.

As far as my journey is concerned, I took Art all through high school, attended a small liberal arts college here in the Northeast (Amherst College) and majored in Fine Arts. I was sidetracked for a few years after graduation working in the insurance industry and came back to art through teaching. I earned my Master’s degree in education and for ten years taught art, beginning in the elementary schools, moving up to middle school for a few years and finally ending up at the high school level. I loved teaching each grade but found high school the most inspiring. More and more I found myself wanting to do the lessons I was teaching and so in 2008, with the support of my husband, decided to resign from teaching and focus on my own art.

Where were you born?

Holden, Massachusetts.

If you could live anywhere where would you live?

I’m kind of simple . . . I really LOVE where I live now. I’m sure there are more beautiful places where I would be very happy as well. I have to say I love New England so anyplace where it’s VERY rural (but with a grocery store and shopping not too far away), there are beautiful old homes, lots of land (would love a pond on the property), and nearby family of course, I could be happy. Think “Orchard House” from Little Women and the farm from “The Bridges of Madison County” with the sound of the screen door closing, from the “Waltons” all rolled into one somehow.

What’s your favorite thing to paint and why?

I love the still life. I like the challenge of creating dynamic compositions and playing with the space. I’ve also always had a thing for design and I LOVE patterns and textures. I love trying to capture the various surfaces in my subjects.

Which of your paintings was the most enjoyable to paint? Which was the most difficult?

This is a funny question to me. All of my paintings are enjoyable to paint – especially at the beginning, but I still always feel as if it’s a crapshoot whether a painting will come together for me in the end. (I must admit there are a lot that I scrap or put off until a later date). However, I’m going to answer “Pumpkin Shadows” because I tried this painting numerous times (beginning last Fall) and kept failing. The experience of a year provided me with the skills to finally make it work. So I guess I could say this was the most enjoyable one to paint while the most difficult.

Do you have a favorite artist? Who has been your biggest inspiration?

Oh geez . . . so many. It’s like eating a potato chip – you can’t have just ONE! Norman Rockwell has always been a favorite – Andrew Wyeth of course and Edward Hopper. I was just turned on to T. Allen Lawson’s work as well. I’ve also always been inspired by Vermeer, Jan van Eyck – and some of those other Dutch and Flemish painters – just amazing. In addition I am constantly inspired and humbled by so many contemporary artists (those of whom I’d have never even known about, yet thanks to the internet I do now.) However my biggest inspiration may be my former students, fellow art teachers and department head. I can’t even explain how inspiring they were and continue to be to me – opening my eyes to the extraordinary – pushing me out of my comfort zone – inspiring me to do what I love.

What are some of your favorite things or things that are essential to your well being/success as an artist?

Painting as close to every day as I can is very important to me. I can’t stress how essential that is to improving one’s skills. (Personally, it also keeps me sane – well, as close to sane as I’ll ever be!) J Also, the computer/internet has been imperative to my “success.” Blogging and Daily Paintworks has completely changed my life – I’m laughing at that – it sounds so dramatic, but it’s true. And because I arrange my still lifes, photograph them, then compose them with the help of Photoshop, also goofing with filters to better see temperature and value, I have to include my digital camera and Photoshop.

Do you have go-to paints/colors, what are your favorites?

I have just discovered New Gamboge through a class I’m taking. LOVE IT! It’s a great yellow. I have found limiting my palette works best for me; otherwise I start getting muddy and all messed up! Cobalt Blue and Alizarin Crimson are definite go-to’s. Burnt Sienna and Raw Sienna are pretty important to me as well.

Do you ever get artist’s block? And what do you do to overcome it?

Yes, definitely. (when don’t I get it!? --Ha!) I just keep painting. I used to tell my students – there are only so many yucky paintings/drawings you have in you so you might as well keep working to get them out of your system so you can get to the good stuff. (I don’t know if that’s true, but it seems to work!) :)

What are five things you would like to happen in your life in the next five years? Dream big here.

Hmm . . . I’m really very content (or totally limited) so I’m not sure. Let’s see:

1) Get gallery representation (I think)

2) Re-do the kitchen and upstairs bathroom (not art related and totally do-able, but would LOVE this!)

3) Become financially independent with my art (thank heavens for my husband!)

4) Would love to see Italy, Ireland and Spain

5) Have my own private jet with an amazing pilot of course. :) This is related to #4 – I HATE public transportation, particularly air travel, so this would be my biggest dream ever.

What is your advice for other artists who are just getting started in their career?

- Paint every day if you can.

- Don’t ignore composition – I think this is probably the most important step because even if you have mad skills a horrible arrangement of the space won’t draw viewers to your work and your skills will be overlooked.

- Get online – research other artists (so inspiring!). Start a blog (it’s free and I’m tellin’ ya’ this has been such a wonderful experience for me, so encouraging thanks to all the wonderful people out there J -- and thank you Carrie!)

- Take some classes if you can – learn to mat your own work (and even frame – such a great skill). Learn Photoshop (you can design your own promotional materials and save oodles of $).

- Invest carefully – KNOW what you are spending and what you are bringing in. – break it down and keep track. You may not be making money for a while, that’s ok (if you can afford it of course) we all love our supplies and have to initially invest, but know that.

- Join an art group if you can; connect with other artists, and enter some shows, get your name and your work out there. (Daily Paintworks has really been amazing for me.)

- Finally, be patient – have goals but don’t expect too much. It’s work, but I think it’s really fun and it can be soooo rewarding.

Was your weekend filled with Holiday decorating and shopping? We are almost all decked out at our house. Steven and Sam have been having so much fun helping me with all the festivities. It's such a magical time of year, especially when you're seeing it through the eyes of a 5 and 2 year old.

Today I have another jar painting for you. I just love painting these guys and they keep selling so it's a win, win! This is a smaller version of "Anticipation".

This passed Saturday was the opening of Randy Higbee's 6" Squared show in Costa Mesa, California. From the pictures Randy has posted it looks like it was a fabulous opening. My paintings look great and I even have sale from opening night.

Hello Everyone,

Today I'm featuring Carol Carter. I can not tell you how excited I was when Carol agreed to an interview. When I decided to start my blog 2 yrs ago and start painting seriously I really had been out of the art world for a long time and did not know any of the artists out there today. When I did searches for watercolor artists Carol Carter was one of first to absolutely make me drop my jaw. Her work is bold, colorful and fresh. I fell in love immediately and have been following her career since. She has been in many magazines and has gained international acclaim. Not only is she a phenomenal artist but so kind and generous. Any time I have reached out with a question she has always enthusiastically answered.

How did you get your start?

I began painting as a child. It was the only way I would get approval or acceptance. It was a way
for me to feel gratified.

What’s your artist journey so far?

I went to college to earn a BA with a major in painting. After I graduated -- I just expected that I
would be an artist. It was in the late 70’s... and everything seemed possible! Of course, it was
harder to do this than expected.
I went back to school and earned an MFA from Washington University. There I learned how to
manage an art career, as well as how to think about art on a different level. It was an expanding
experience for me.
After graduate school-- I became a more serious artist -- having exhibitions and doing commissions
and earning a living in various degrees of success.
Motherhood became part of my experience in my 30’s. I felt it was more important to be ‘a good
mom’ than successful artist... so I relegated my art to a secondary career.
Now that my son is grown -- I have way more time to invest in my career. I have made a
commitment to grow my career and exposure via the internet and social media.
I have also made a bigger commitment to do more workshops to bring in income.
I feel that I have the artistic credibility of a mid career artist now.
I am teaching workshops nationally and internationally, published in magazines, and beginning to
share my work outside of the United States on a regular basis.

If you could live anywhere where would you live?

I would probably live in Europe- because it feels so accepting of the arts. I love it there. I enjoyed
France and Italy immensely.

What’s your favorite thing to paint and why?

I love painting the swimmer and pool because it is a metaphor for life and the human condition. I
love figurative work. I also love the floral.

Could you talk about your painting techniques? I know you paint on the floor and like humid
conditions?

I paint watercolor on the floor-- flat- so the paint can puddle and blossom. I use the organic
watermarks or blossoms to be an important element in my work. The humidity in the air is
important -- because it allows the larger washes of watercolor to dry slowly and carefully -- with
brilliance and color. The longer the paint stays moist -- the more time one has to manipulate it.
I also love to paint acrylic-- and do that vertically on the wall. I paint using glazes and varnishes.
People frequently can’t tell that the paintings are acrylic-- and often confuse them with my
watercolor.

Do you mostly work wet into wet?

I work wet into wet- but only in a controlled area of the paper. I work sectionally-- only wetting the
area which I will manipulate that moment. I never wet the whole paper at once.
I love the blooms and gorgeous color combinations; you really seem to love to play with your paint,
how did you arrive at your current style?
I don’t know when this current style of painting began-- but it seemed to appear after graduate
school. I suppose this working method ‘found me’ after two years of intense work in content,
criticism, and art history. I became the watercolorist that I am today-- shortly after graduation.

Do you have a favorite artist?

I love Eric Fischl and Joseph Raffael. Also Winslow Homer, John Singer Sargent, Pendergast...
Van Gogh... so many!

Who has been your biggest inspiration?

My son. Motherhood has taught me so much about life, love, art, humanity. I often said when he
was little... “ Evan took away my time to paint....but gave me my reason to paint.” He has been my
biggest source of inspiration ever.

What are some of your favorite things or things that are essential to your well being/success as an
artist?

Contact with the people who enjoy my work -- either in person, at a show, in the studio, in the
classroom, or via the web.
I wouldn’t like to paint very much-- unless I could relate to my audience. I love hearing/talking
with other’s about art.
Good light - day light --north light.
Good music in studio.
Time to work.
Good and plentiful art supplies.
Harmony in the home.

Do you have go-to paints/colors, what are your favorites?

Watercolor: Burnt Sienna, French Ultramarine Blue, Prussian Blue, Cobalt Turquoise, Aureolin
Acrylic: Titanium White, Baltic Blue, Naples Yellow, Quinacridone Gold.

How do you balance your teaching life with your art career?

It used to be hard -- but not it is easy -- because my son is grown.
However, when he was small -- I used to paint ONLY during the school day -- and not beyond. I
would spend more time with him and his needs than on my art. I would say it is a challenge to have
a family AND an art career... but it is possible!
For the last two years I taught watercolor/painting at a local university. It seemed like I had NO
time to manage my career in the studio. I loved teaching this intensely ... but it didn’t leave me
enough time to paint.
Now I only teach workshops -- and I am trying to teach one a month -- so that it allows for studio
time. So far.... it is working.

What are five things you would like to happen in your life in the next five years? Dream big here:)

Travel/teach in Italy.
Travel/teach in India.
Trip to China to see the Silk Road and develop a show on this imagery.
A museum exhibition.
An exhibition in NYC.

What is your advice for other artists who are just getting started in their career?
Paint as much as you can.

Paint only what you want to paint-- don’t paint for an audience.
Learn everything about art-- framing, marketing, business, photography.
You will have to do it ALL in your career-- so learn everything it takes.
Show everywhere. No show is too small. There are no “small shows”.... only “small artists.”
You never know what the exposure will bring to you -- when your work is outside the studio.
Paint everyday.

What is the best advice that you have received as an artist?

Show up to the studio 6 days a week to work and paint. On Sunday -- go to the studio to look at
your work.
Paint every day.
Your work doesn’t improve from painting-to-painting... it grows from year-to-year.

Have you recovered from your Turkey day and Black Friday madness? We had a great dinner with family. It's a bit of an adjustment not having Brian here this year, but we're making the best of it.

Today I have some small works to share with you. I've been doing some 4x4's. They may be small but they have a lot of impact.

Hope you had a great Turkey Day for all of my U.S. bloggers. Today I'm featuring Julie Hill. Julie is a fellow watercolorist but our styles are completely different. Her work is beautiful and impressionistic. I first met Julie through Artists' Helping Artist radio show. Julie has become a blogging buddy and she is always happy to talk watercolor and give advice.

"A Boy's Special Moment" 22 x 30 watercolor by Julie Hill

How did you get your start? What’s your artist journey so far?

I believe that I have had a non-conventional start in the artistic world. First a little background, I have a PhD in Microbiology and Molecular Biology from UCLA. Up until 2004, I was professor at USC School of Medicine, taught at the graduate level, had a multi-million dollar NIH funded research program at Childrens Hospital Los Angeles…whew…that’s a mouthful isn’t it?. I was pretty good at what I was doing, actually in academic sciences I was considered fairly successful. Anyway, although I was good, it became clear that it wasn’t God’s plan for me….I won’t ramble on with all the details (they are available in an excellent radio interview by Gene Gee- the link is on my blog), but suffice it to say…I had not a creative inclination in me what-so-ever….I was strictly an academic scientist…but I did have the idea that someday “When I retire, I am going to learn how to Salsa dance and watercolor paint”. I suppose the Lord, was saying to me… “What are you waiting for?”….and there it began, first by learning how to draw…then playing with the wet colors on paper. I am self-taught with the exception of a series of classes from an artist whose style spoke to me. I just painted whatever I felt. And here the journey continues …still only painting whatever I feel. I have been blessed that my accomplishments in the artistic arena have come at a very fast pace, and seemingly without me hitting the pavement or starving in the process. If one really thinks about it, it is crazy...but that’s God for you and I love it!

Where were you born?

I am a southern California native (and almost embarassassingly enough, I can say that I have lived no where else)

If you could live anywhere where would you live?

In a remote place…surrounded by peaceful nature, simpler times and lots of land and Oak trees.

What’s your favorite thing to paint and why?

I love capturing moments, ordinary moments or scenes…but somehow portraying that special distinctive quality about the ordinary. I also especially enjoy painting structures, architecture, cityscapes, etc….I feel there is a grounded quality that I absorb when painting those scenes.

Which of your paintings was the most enjoyable to paint? Which was the most difficult?

This is a hard question, because I do find joy whenever and where ever I paint (I guess that’s why it’s my passion), but if I had to choose: One of my favorite pieces to do was “I Prayed…” an interior of St. Peter’s Basilica. I was doing the piece and wondered what the inscription was…I found a translation and part of the text said “I prayed…”. The technique and color palette I used on that piece was so simple…yet the “bones” of that painting was so intense….it made me reflect on life and how we can approach the complex. Just keep it simple and basic…and you can get through it. The most difficult painting I have done was somewhere in the middle of my recent train series….Black steam engines are really challenging to paint and to read well…especially in the impressionistic style that I do. Ironically, amongst all those trains I found another of my favorites “A Boy’s Special Moment” a piece depicting a timeless black steam engine with a father and son walking together…I love that I could capture that moment in a boy’s life.

Do you have a favorite artist? Who has been your biggest inspiration?

Well this question is a bit embarrassing for me to answer…I have no art background, not even an art appreciation class in college…so my knowledge base is very slim. Though I have to say I love the Impressionists and their story. I find it very inspiring that the style and approach of the Impressionists was not accepted in the beginning…rebels and forward-thinkers. I like that.

What are some of your favorite things or things that are essential to your well being/success as an artist?

My favorite things: Arches cold press 140 lb natural white paper…nothing like it!, my Silver Kolinski sable #18 round brush, my 2” large flat wash brush (keeps me loose), and a quiet serene work space.

Essential things for my well being/success: My faith….I am here because of a gift, every painting that comes out of me is a blessing, and not of my doing.

Do you have go-to paints/colors, what are your favorites?

I use primarily Holbein, Winsor-Newton and Daniel Smith paints. I have found that W/N French Ultramarine and their Permanent Alizarin Crimson work the best for me. Whereas I enjoy Holbein’s paints probably the most. I have the standard palette of warm and cools of each primary…a few earth tones and my additional “go to” colors: Holbein’s Lavender, W/N Quinacridone Gold, Holbein’s Cobalt Turquoise Light and Daniel Smith’s Bordeaux.

Do you ever get artist’s block? And what do you do to overcome it?

I wouldn’t say its artist’s block…but perhaps moments of little inspiration. Usually it just means I need to get out there and live a little…take in life a bit more….or just the opposite…sleep.

What are five things you would like to happen in your life in the next five years? Dream big here:)

This question is very challenging for me, because 5 years ago I would have never imagined or even had the desire to be where I am now… I am in disbelief that I am here. All that said, I do see a few things in my artistic future:

Designated studio space…great light and fabulous storage.
Travelling and painting trips
Representation by one more gallery (I think 4 is a good number)
Publish a book...a different kind of book highlighting my work…

What is your advice for other artists who are just getting started in their career?

If you have truly found your passion….then it will all work out. Because you will always be doing what you love, and how can that be wrong? Paint, paint, paint…

It’s just paper…go for it!

Pumpkin Pie, I bet a lot of you will be baking one of these this week:) Pumpkin pie is not my favorite pie, but it certainly does conjure up memories of Thanksgivings past and Christmas for that matter. I had never made a pie until I got married. Pies are a huge deal in the Waller family. A Waller Thanksgiving has been known to have just about every pie you can think of. My mother-in-law is the Queen of making pie crust and I am happy to say she has taught me. This was, I believe part of my marriage proposal, will you marry me and will you learn to make pie:)

The photo reference for this painting is from a pie that my Mother-in-law and her sister made for our early Thanksgiving celebration. My hubby left for Afghanistan about a week ago so we had an early Holiday this year. And of course pumpkin pie present for this celebration, in fact there were 2 pumpkin pies.

So when Crystal Cook and I decided to start a monthly challenge and she proposed Thankfulness as our first challenge inspiration I had a lot of things go through my mind. I settled on pumpkin pie. I'm thankful to have married into a family that taught me the importance of a from scratch crust and pie. I'm thankful that I became a Waller and I'm thankful for my husband, who loves his pumpkin pie:)
